Tape to Stuart Kelsey Oct 12/76
Uh-huh. I have to go up and see what… I turned the stuff over to Gabe last week, so…
Hello there, John. How are you tonight? Well, I’m not too bad at all, Bill.
Good. I was down at the Institute for the Deaf. I demonstrated the machine again.
Oh.
The Ministry of Environment have got another apartment building that has got to stop incinerating, or they’ve been told to. And I took this woman over, and her mother, and the superintendent of the apartment building, and they were very impressed with it.
Good.
So, it looks good. We’re to hear definitely from them. What I called about, Bill, was the first installation we made at McDonald’s at Victoria Park in St. Clara. Yeah. Evidently, the timer has been acting up, and then it quit. Now, I don’t know whether somebody hit it or not, but he called an electrician in to bypass the timer, and that’s the way he’s got the machine working now.
Oh, yeah.
And then the leg of the machine is turning off base itself. Now, I thought there were lag bolts in there, and I thought that was bolted into the concrete.
As far as I know, it was.
Yeah.
I’m quite sure, John. I thought Ron came down and bolted that into the concrete. I was sure he did.
Which end is kicking around?
The front end.
Well, I’m sure that was fastened in. Mm-hmm. Well, I’m sure he fastened both ends. Well, yeah, that’d be right.
But what, did one of those bolts break off, or the two front ones? So, the machine would shift?
I tell you what they could do. Well, no, they don’t put that on with the truck. They pull that in and put it on by hand.
Yeah.
Well, I was thinking maybe they might have backed up to it and hit it or something. Well, they might have done that. I don’t know. Well, we’ll find out. Yeah. But we’ll find out looking up there. But anyway, Ron’s coming down, and if he could get a timer, well, I’ll… Yeah, that’s a good idea. He can do it. I think he’s got timers here. Yeah, he’s got… Seems to be, John, that he put a better timer on that one.
The first installation?
Yeah, the first one, remember, played out? Yeah.
And then he, I think he changed it and got one of the higher priced ones.
Yeah, that’s right. He did change it. Yeah, yeah.
So, we’ll find out if that one is no good. Maybe that one is a poor one.
Well, it could be.
See, it’s used a lot, you know. I beg your pardon?
It’s used a lot.
Yeah, yeah.
And that could be the reason, you know. Maybe you’ll have to go to a better timer.
Uh-huh, right.
Well, I just thought I’d call because Ron’s coming down on Friday for that installation, eh? Um, how do you feel? I don’t feel too bad. I thought the way you were talking, you were tired out or something. Well, I’m a little tired. I’m off. I’ve just completed this drug for my phlebitis. But I’m going back to see him Friday. It isn’t doing much good. All it does is knock the tire out of me, you know.
But, however…
That environmental one you were talking about, who was that supposed to be?
Is that the Ontario Housing?
The environmental one?
You said you…
Oh, no, that’s not Ontario Housing. No, this is a private apartment. Oh, a private apartment.
Yeah, an 80-suite apartment.
Oh. They’ve got 82 or 84 suites in there.
A bagger?
Well, yes, a bagger for them because there’s no way they can…
Were they satisfied with the speed?
Very much so.
They were. Well, they were very satisfied with the machine. They didn’t speak anything about the… They didn’t mention about the speed of the machine.
Okay, I can hear you now. Oh, okay.
Has Josephine left yet?
Yeah, he has. He left about 20 minutes ago. Oh, okay. Thank you. You’re welcome.
Bye.
Well, that was kind of a provoking one, you know.
Yeah.
Well, the ones that you’ve got now will be like the one in… pretty close to the one in Hamilton, right? Well, that’s fine. Yeah. That’s fine. Well, yes, they’ve got to have a bagger in there, and it’s comparatively simple to get it in. Ron was telling me that you thought that Ontario Housing was quite interested in a bunch of them. Well, they’ve got 19 apartments in a district called Lawrence Heights here in Toronto, and I called Bill Smith of Ontario Housing to thank him for seeing that that order was processed, that they sent up to you and appreciated his interest and so on. Well, he says we’re going to need 10 more, John. He said that something.
Yeah, he says we’ve got 19 apartments up there.
10 of them need baggers, so… Oh, that’s good. He says this will be coming your way. Well, that sounds good.
We don’t want them all at once anyway. No.
But that’s fine.
That’s fine.
Yeah.
So things are looking good.
Well, we’re smarting right up. I’ve got the place all cleaned up here now. Good. Pretty well. Yeah.
Yeah, we’re working hard.
Ron is working very hard to get things in order. Well, I told him… He’ll have this ready for Friday.
He’s working on it tonight. He’s putting that…
He’s going to put it on the box. He’s going to put the box hook up to it.
Hook up the box there and set it down there.
Yeah, that’ll be a lot nicer for him.
Oh, yeah, it’s level.
Yeah.
There’s no reason why it wouldn’t fit properly.
Oh, yeah.
And there’s lots of room, as a matter of fact. We’ve got to disconnect the other one that’s in there, so…
I think we should charge them for that.
For disconnecting their present compactor. I think they’ll go for that kind of thing. Oh, yeah, sure. They’ve got to.
No, I think the day has gone by where we do things for nothing.
No way we’re not doing any more for nothing.
Yeah, we’ve done that to break our way in. Now they think they should…
Oh, sure. They’ll play ball with it. Well, I told them to decide whether they’re going to call a scrap company to take the box and the compactor away, or whether they wanted us to take it away. Well, he said, can you sell it?
I said, no, we can’t sell it. There’s nothing in it that’s any good to us.
And I said, as far as a scrap company is concerned, they pay you $50 in that ton for scrap. And I said, by the time their truck gets up there and loads it and gets it back again, you’ll be lucky to get $25 for it. So I said, you decide what you want to do with it.
Whatever you want to do with it, it’s okay by us.
What’d he say?
He said, I’ll let you know.
He hasn’t let me know yet.
Is there a box to go in there, too?
Yeah, there’s a six cubic yard box.
Well, we got one in the backyard here. They could be fixed. The one that’s here is not a bad looking, you know, but it would cost something to do it.
Sure, well…
But I told Ron we’d probably get one of them fixed up, and if they ever get broke down again, they’d have one to slip right in someplace. That’s right. That’s right. I think it would be very…
It would be a good idea.
Yeah.
I think we ought to have a spare one.
Yeah.
That’ll be fine.
But things are all right. I’m very busy.
Well, I know.
That’s what I hear. But, yeah…
I think things now look a little better, in my views, in a way. Well, I phoned Humber College, and they were the ones that I spent so much time with, and they haven’t placed their order yet for that other compactor, and I said, ours is about $1,000 cheaper now. We’ve made some bulk purchases, and we’re able to get our costs down.
Well, they said, for heaven’s sakes, get that quotation into me.
We haven’t bought it yet.
Oh.
So…
That sounds good, too.
There’s a good possibility, and I’m going to go over all of them now.
Yeah.
Well, look, I don’t want to run up the bill, but I thought I’d give you a call.
Well, you encourage me.
Yeah. I swear so.
Oh, you bet.
Okay, Phil.
Take care.
You take care.
Hello.
Hello, John.
Yes, Phil.
How are you tonight?
Oh, I’m not bad, thanks. Coming down tomorrow?
That’s what he’s expecting. Oh, good.
Fine.
He’s got it all painted down. I’m just getting ready to load it. Oh, good.
He’s fixed the box up to take the compactor. It’s all off. Yeah.
It’s all together, so we won’t have to do that when he goes down.
Well, that’s a good thing. It’d be nice if it could be done every time rather than…
Well, if we knew whether it was going to be on the left or right-hand side of the box or straight ahead forward, that’s all we need to know when we’ve got it. You know what I mean?
No, I don’t know.
Well, when it’s straight in to the box, it’s straight in the middle of the box, eh?
Oh, yes. No, sometimes we put it to one side, eh, because of a tight squeeze someplace. Oh, I see.
I hadn’t known of those.
That’s the only reason why he can’t do it here is he doesn’t know for sure which side the box is going to be or where it’s going to be.
Oh, you mean on the end or the side? Yeah, where it hooks up.
Oh, yes.
Sometimes we put it on the side of the box, depending on…
Yeah, we had to do that in Valhalla.
That’s right.
That’s true. Well, he’d rather do them here if he can do them.
Oh, yes.
Down there, it makes a lot of work. It’s a half day’s work to put that on his own. Oh, I agree.
I agree, and it’s much easier to do it there when he has everything.
Yeah, he’s got the shop and the welder and everything.
Oh, sure.
I’m not sure.
I’ll give you that.
Oh, before I forget, where is the phone?
It’s going to Shepherd. It’s not…
No, no. It’s going to Lawrence Avenue and Midland.
Lawrence Avenue and…
Midland Avenue.
Midland. Yes, you come down Midland from 401.
Yeah.
To Lawrence Avenue. To Lawrence Avenue.
And you turn to the left.
Turn left.
You’ll see a Burger King at the corner of Lawrence and Midland.
Burger King.
Yeah, and you turn left there on Lawrence Avenue.
And it’s about a block on the right-hand side.
It’s on Lawrence Avenue that it is.
It’s on Lawrence Avenue.
Yeah. Yeah.
It’s about a block east of Midland on Lawrence Avenue.
On Lawrence. East. Okay.
Yeah. I got it on tape, but I’m just writing it down in case something happens.
Oh, sure.
That’s a good idea. Yeah, sure.
Bye.
Okay. What was I going to ask you?
You’ll probably ask you anyway.
Well…
I was down there today, and they said, Well, you can put it in. We’ve got the doors on. I went down there, and there was only mud there.
And we’d have to put…
They’d have to put planking down for us, and we’d have to unload it on planking and pull it along on dollies, and then lift it about a foot and a half to get it into the room.
Oh, that’d be good.
Or push it up on planks into the room, and that’s impossible.
Yeah. I thought they were going to put a smanthian or whatever.
Well, they were going to pave it for us so that we could roll the bin and move the machine on dollies on the concrete. And then they were going to make a gentle slope down to the concrete from the garbage room so that it could be pushed up and into the garbage room. And they haven’t done it yet. I don’t know. I think we ought to invoice them for that. Well, I think Ron wouldn’t want to do that. I don’t know why he didn’t. Maybe he has already. Have we invoiced for those last two boxes? Fred, I’m not sure, John.
I haven’t seen an invoice. Well, they should be a copy to you, you know. Yeah, I haven’t seen one. Well, I’ll ask him now. If he remembered to invoice.
Yeah. He’s been so busy.
He’s all alone now, John. Yes, I understand.
We’re trying to get along a little bit.
Yeah.
Now, he was going to come down and try and… He’s got a lot of work to do in one day. I don’t think he can do it in one day.
No, he said he’d like to go down for a day or day and a half or two days even if it was necessary.
At the beginning of the week?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, I think that’s what he should do.
Well, I want him to have a look at that Ontario housing and decide just how the compactor’s going to go in there.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, he’s…
What happened? I don’t think I heard, but he said something about… What was it I was going to ask you? I forgot now.
Yeah, well, it’ll come.
Anyway, that’s all he wanted to know for sure. Yeah.
Where to go.
Oh, yeah, sure.
He’s got a nice looking machine. He’s got the hopper painted.
Oh, yes.
This is the 14-gauge hopper.
Yeah, it’s a beautiful thing. It’s good and strong and I think it’s going to be the ideal way of doing it.
That is on this type of machine. I complained to Irv Kalb about the carelessness and the vandalism down there at Flemington Park.
That’s that second installation.
Yeah. And he said he’d look into it.
But, you know, and then I got a call from Murray Pacman and a wheels off of one of our boxes.
And I said, well, what happened? Did they drop it? Yeah, he said they smashed it up. Well, I said, do you pay them cash for each lift? He said, no, they render a statement.
Well, I said, you phone the people that were there before and weld it for you.
And you just phone them, get them to come down and either put a new wheel on or weld the old one back on if it’ll go on. And then you deduct that from their invoice.
Who was that from?
Super Disposal.
You see, this is the last pickup for Super Disposal. They’re changing over to FBI.
Are they having a time, too?
They had Superior.
Yeah, they had Superior and Sure. And then they went to this other outfit. They’re crazy.
I told them to go to FBI.
Yeah.
So now, finally, they’re going to FBI.
Hmm. Hmm. Change again. Right? Are we going to have trouble with this kind of thing, I wonder? Well, I don’t think so. As soon as they swing over to FBI… I was wondering if someday I might go down and go, we should do FBI management. There’s some place that has the say and talk to them about what we’re doing this for and why.
Yeah.
And get some understanding that we’re not trying to get them out of business. That we’re trying to get them business.
Oh, they’re very encouraged.
And I have very good rapport with FBI. Yeah, I have.
Oh, yes.
Excellent.
I met two of them down at a McDonald’s that I want the machine to go into that you’ve got ready, almost ready for them. And FBI were there.
Three of their men were there and shook hands with me and thanked me.
And we have very good rapport with them.
Oh, that’s just great.
Because I’ve recommended them, you see, to McDonald’s.
And FBI now have five McDonald’s accounts. And they’re going to get a lot more. And they’re very, very pleased with what we’ve done for them. Well, that’s fine. They know that we’re giving them a lot of kind of a hard time. Well, they know that we’re trying to work with them and trying to get them into McDonald’s because they’re the best company here in Toronto. Good.
And they appreciate it.
And they’ve expressed that appreciation.
Oh, that’s good.
And they had an hour and a half meeting at the head office of…
Well, that’s all necessary then.
Oh, yeah. They had a big meeting with McDonald’s at their head office.
And McDonald’s asked them a great many questions.
It lasted for an hour and a half. And McDonald’s, I think, will swing over entirely to FBI here.
And I was going to ask you, what results might have come out of this big dinner that they had on?
Oh, well, unfortunately, I couldn’t get into that.
The reason I didn’t go into it was because there might have been some criticism had I gone down there and handed out brochures.
No, I was just wondering if they had done something about showing them the equipment.
No, they didn’t. As far as I know, that didn’t come up. That’s right. But, you know, it should have come up.
Yeah. And it should have come up under the heading of disposal.
And somebody should have given a talk at it.
But I wasn’t asked to, and I didn’t want to interfere with their meetings. Or else I would have. I would like to have had some slides, you know, even to show a group of men there.
But I was pretty busy and I couldn’t get away, you know, to spend time down there.
Well, it’ll come up again.
Oh, yes, they’ll have another big meeting.
Sure they will. And they’ll have local meetings and all the rest of it. But we want to get well established with them and get good rapport. What do you think the future is for us, John? Well, I think it’s very encouraging.
You see, we’ve only hit one district that has five restaurants.
That’s all. And we’re getting four installations out of the five. So that’s pretty darn good.
Now we can move on to other districts.
Right in Toronto. Yeah, there are four districts in Toronto. And as soon as we get our machines in, then I can go after the others.
That means we’ve got to give good service.
Well, I think so. They’re very pleased with us so far.
Yeah, and Ronnie is quite interested in getting that timer set up different too now.
He thinks we’ve got a solid state in there. Sure, sure. Well, get it inside the switch box. Well, they’re all in but that one.
That’s the first one he done. Yeah, right.
He made a mistake there.
Well, he said he’s going to bring down another switch.
Well, that was their fault though.
They probably swung a carton at it and knocked it off, you know.
And they knocked off the button for the on-off switch at Flemington Park. They did? Yeah, well sure. They said they lost it, but you know and I know it was vandalized. Like they pulled it off and threw it right in the garbage?
Well, somebody pulled it off and threw it away.
Well, like they were in there once before and stole the keys. That’s right. And that’s a tough district and they’ve got to keep that door locked.
And I’ve complained to McDonald’s or Galbabel and he’s going to look into it. But these are things that happen but we want to discourage them happening because it takes time.
It takes our time and it’s an expense. And we’ve just got to work with them and explain our problem and their problems and see if we can’t work it out.
And have locks on all these doors, which they should have.
Yeah.
Well, fine Bill. I’ll see Ron.
Well, John or I mean Ron will be going home I guess tomorrow.
When does he expect to be here?
I don’t know. He’ll leave fairly early I imagine.
Yeah. But he’s been working awful hard to get this finished.
I beg your pardon?
He’s been working hard to get this finished. Yeah. Well, fine. We’ve got it all ready for loading now just about. Good. Well, we’ll see him in the morning.
Yeah. Okay.
Okay, Bill. Thanks for calling.
Take care. Bye-bye.
This is Bill. Yeah, Bill. How are you? I’m not too bad. Talking about you yesterday as a matter of fact. Bad? I got a call from Dick White.
Bad or good? Oh, it’s quite good.
What they have to do now, I meant to call you anyhow after I talked to him, but it will take anywhere from three to six weeks. Yeah.
What they’re doing now is they had to revise their figures of course because of the additional cost, but he doesn’t anticipate that’s going to be much of a problem. Then the proposal has to go to the management in Montreal and they look at these things once a month. Yeah.
And Dick seems to be quite saying that they’ll get the money for it.
At that point then they’ll issue the order.
Yeah, they seemed quite interested when they were here.
Oh, yeah. There’s no question about it. I mean, it was just what they wanted to do. As you recall, it was over a year ago since we were down there last and they just wanted to get that end of it.
This, as I explained to you, this is in two stages.
There’s another phase of it, but apparently it’s in next year’s budget. It’s a hog that they’re going to buy to break up their sheets, their big four by eight sheets. Oh, yeah. But that part of the program is going to come in the next year’s program, but this one, as I said, it will be going down to them.
It’ll be in Montreal before the end of the month and, as he said, it can take anywhere from three to six weeks. Yeah, well, it’ll take us a while after they give us the order.
Oh, yeah.
Well, they understand that, but I mean, it takes that long for them to get the word back, but he seems to feel 75%, 25% that it’ll go ahead.
So all we can do now, Bill, is just sit and keep our fingers crossed.
Yeah, there was somebody from the office called here the other day from down there.
Oh, I see. Just asking questions with Ron.
I don’t know what it was now, but it was something that they wanted to know. Yeah, well, this was probably after they got your quotation. I was away for a few days, so I guess they went directly to you, but at any rate, it doesn’t matter. It’s just a question now of them revising their figures. They had it all prepared on the old price, you see. Yeah.
So, as I said, it looks fairly good.
Yeah, I thought so. Good.
Okay.
Fine, Bill.
Thanks for calling and if I hear anything, they’ll probably come back to me as soon as they know and I’ll get in touch with you.
Good.
All right.
Hello, John. Yes.
It’s Ron speaking.
Yes, Ron. Okay.
How’d you make out today?
Well, I got a disposal company to come in at Don Mills with a rear end loader and clean up all the garbage and told them to pile it up and the front end loader will be back again on Monday.
I see.
And this company, this is called Disposal.
Disposal is limited.
If they can’t come back, then I can get another company to come in.
I see. And they keep the garbage down, you know, so they can clean it up.
All right. And when did they come this morning?
Yeah.
They came, I was down there about 10 o’clock and they cleaned it all up. I see. And I got another call from where we put in that four cubic yard box last night.
The little ring that we’d welded on there on the side, it broke off. The weld broke. Little ring?
Well, you know, the eye that the hook goes into on the four cubic yard box you made. Was this the first place that I put one in?
No, that was the six cubic yard box. We welded great big hooks on there.
We took them off the other six cubic yard box and put them on the new one. Yeah. And on the second one, where you put in a four cubic yard box, you remember you took the plate off, eh? Yeah.
With the eye on it.
Yeah, right.
And the eye broke loose. So I had to get a welder in there. And he came in this morning and welded it back on. Those are not too good, you know. No.
They’re not too strong.
They may break again.
I wouldn’t doubt it.
I’m trying to think of the…
Yeah, I know the one you’re talking about now.
You remember it was way out there at Morningside and Kennedy Road and Kingston Road on Lawrence Avenue, you know? Yeah.
And I was able to get a man in there this morning.
And…
Excuse me.
I also got a call from the new installation.
The machine wouldn’t run.
The machine wouldn’t run? No.
And I went out there last night.
And after my dinner, you know, I got a call. And I went out there and I could see that the lights were barely illuminated. Well, I said, there’s the reason.
I said, it’s the power. I said, there’s not enough power coming through to operate the motor, let alone the pump.
So I said, you better call your electrician first thing in the morning and get him out here.
So then I went out this morning and the electrician was there.
And apparently an incorrect fuse was put in in the basement some time ago.
Uh-huh.
And he put a new fuse in and we were away to the races.
Oh. Well, maybe that was the trouble that one time that you started it there yesterday.
It could be, too. Because it sounded as if one of the phases wasn’t kicking in.
I couldn’t figure it out.
I just thought maybe it didn’t get a good connection when you push the button on or something.
Well, he also went into the control box and he said there was a loose wire in there that he tightened up. But I don’t know whether it was or not.
But it’s the same company, you know?
Yeah. Not the same electrician, but the same company.
Uh-huh.
So that’s their baby, not ours.
Yeah.
So I stuck around until I threw in and cleaned up all the garbage for them.
And they were very pleased.
How’s it working anyway?
Oh, fine.
Fine.
She’s working fine. Okay.
Very good.
But I went down to our first installation down there. I was just talking to a chap today about that and he’s going to come up with a timer for us that hopefully will be better than the one we had on there that will go inside the box and they won’t be touching.
Oh yeah, that’s a good idea.
I’m doing some work for him and I told him if I did some work great today that if he could get that timer for me, it’s going to be a solid state timer and he’s going to build it for me.
Yeah.
Well I said that we couldn’t get down last night because it was so late and the installation I said you wouldn’t be down next week though.
Yeah. Okay, now what I’m going to be doing, John, we’re all set to go, we’re going tomorrow and we’re going to take the cylinder out tomorrow. Oh yeah.
Yeah.
We’re going to come down and take the cylinder out and then first thing Monday morning I’m going to take it up to Elmira.
I see.
And see if they can’t fix it on Monday.
Yeah, right. So I can get it back in Tuesday morning.
Yeah, fine.
Now, there’s no possibility of getting that garbage cleaned up again tomorrow morning.
Ah, well, that’s a good point. We’re going to get to come on Sunday, eh? No one will come at all, eh?
I doubt it.
I can try.
Because I’ve got a pressure washer here I was going to clean the machine hall off too while I was there.
Yeah. Because it’s in terrible shape. Yeah, it’s pretty messy all right. They hosed the whole place out after they got the garbage out. They did, didn’t they? Yeah. But the machine is in pretty bad shape. Yes, it’s got a lot of garbage in it.
And the hydraulic oil is going to be pretty sticky when I get it out of there, eh?
A lot of hydraulic oil in the bottom of the cylinder. Oh, yeah.
It’s sitting in there about two or three gallons.
Right. I want it to have the washer to wash that all out and wash the machine down and everything.
A good pressure washer.
Yeah, sure.
If I had the garbage out, I could do a good job, that’s all. Yeah.
Well, I’ll see if I can get somebody.
I doubt it though on a Sunday.
Yeah.
Well, if you can’t, well, we’ll have to work around it.
Yeah. My grandfather’s going to be coming down with me tomorrow. I see. Right. We’ll be there first thing in the morning. Yeah. Okay, Ron.
Okay.
Yeah, I think other things are under control.
I’ve got a wheel for that box.
Oh, good.
And I can get that on too when I get back here next week.
Are you going to put that on tomorrow? Pardon me?
Are you going to put the wheel on tomorrow?
No, I don’t think I’ll get time. I don’t…
Well, we’ll see.
Maybe I will, although I hate running my welder on Sunday, you know.
Yeah.
It’s pretty noisy.
Oh, well, there’s nobody around there. Of course, out there is way out in the country, isn’t it? Well, there’s a big garage next to it, you know. Yeah.
There are no houses around there. Well, we’ll see.
I’ll see.
Maybe I’ll be able to… Yeah. Well…
If I can, I will.
If you get time.
Sure.
Well, we’ll maybe see you tomorrow, eh? Yeah. I tried to get a hold of the company that built that cylinder, and I couldn’t get a hold of nobody today. No.
So, I even called the guy’s home, and there’s no answer.
He got away for the weekend, I guess. Well, I had to call the welder at home. I found another welder. I couldn’t get an answer from the fellow that has been doing the welding, so I called another welder, and he came out right away and welded that box. I agree.
That there ring wasn’t very good.
I didn’t like the looks of it when I put it on there, I’ll tell you. No.
No.
I didn’t have anything else to put on. Well, I guess we’ve got to pay for that. We do, eh? Well, yeah.
Sure. Where…
Is this…
Is this the second installation?
Well, this is a little four cubic yard box you put in, and you remember you took the plate off that had that ring on it?
Oh, yeah. The other box. Yeah, yeah. And you told me at the time it didn’t look too good, you know. No.
And sure enough, it broke.
The weld broke on it. Yeah, that wasn’t my welding, though. Eh?
That wasn’t my welding. Well, we…
We sold them the box, you know. Yeah.
And it shouldn’t have…
We shouldn’t have…
You know, if something breaks on it, well, then we shouldn’t have put it on.
We should have put a decent ring on there, a decent connection on there.
Yeah.
That’s…
That’s for sure, Ron. Yeah.
Well, I’m going to have to come down and put something on it, because that’s just going to break and break and break.
Oh, yeah. They’re going to continue breaking. It looks like… Well, when I change the plates, it looks like the welds have gone 13 dozen times already.
Yeah. So…
Okay. Well, it’ll get us out of trouble if you can weld something else on there. Well, yeah. Something better than that, I mean. Yeah. I think we’re welding something better.
Like those big hooks that were on that six cubic yard box that you cut off and put on your…
The new box, eh?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Something of that nature, yeah.
They were tremendous.
I was in there that day, and it was working beautifully.
Good.
It was fine.
So, I made the rounds.
Yeah.
Okay, John.
Well, I’ll see you tomorrow then. All right, Ron. Fine. Goodbye.
Cheers. Speaking.
Yeah. It’s the Skatepark Limited Del High Collie. Oh, yeah. Okay. Last week, I ran into some trouble.
A machine that I have in Toronto, in a McDonald’s restaurant, you supplied a cylinder to me about, oh, last February, I guess it would be.
It would have been through Eastern Hydraulics at the time.
It would have been what? Through Eastern Hydraulics.
Oh, yeah.
You built a cylinder for me there. Now, they called saying that the machine wasn’t developing any power, so I went down.
Now, what’s happening is that the cylinder is going up about half a stroke, and then the oil is going right by, right by the, just the cylinder only developing about 1,000 pound pressure. And there’s a slight leak at the very front gland where the rod comes out of the cylinder. Oh, yeah. You mean on the rod or?
On the rod.
Now, I took the cylinder out. I got it here with me now, and the rod is scored.
I don’t know what’s done it.
And, like I said, the inside is leaking by.
Now, what is the problem is that this is one of the busiest restaurants in all of Toronto.
And they’re up to their eyeballs in derby, and they’re screaming something terrific. Yeah.
So, I was intending to come down this morning.
Is there anything you can do for me right away? Yeah.
We’ll pull her apart and see what we can do.
Okay. Well, I’ll be up in about an hour and a half.
Okay.
Okay.
Now, just to make sure I remember how to get to your place, can you give me a quick direction for you?
Which way do you come from, through Elmira?
No, I’ll be coming, let’s see.
Yeah, Elmira.
Okay.
If you’re in Elmira, you turn right towards Guelph. Okay.
And then we’re the first road on the right. Right towards Guelph.
Okay.
Three miles out of town. And the third building on the right. First road to the right.
Okay, fine. So, I’ll be right up. Okay.
That’s fine. Oh, John?
Yes. How are you tonight?
Not bad, not bad. Ron? That’s good to hear. Yeah. Okay, just thought I’d bring up the date as to what’s happening here.
Right.
I got the box today for the other place here.
Oh, good. I was speaking to them today. Oh, yeah. They were asking for it. Yeah.
Well, I’ll have it ready.
I was going to come down Monday, first thing Monday morning.
Fine, that’s good.
Okay.
Yeah, that’s fine.
And I’ll fix those plates on the floor for them. Oh, yeah, that’s good too.
And I’ve got a timer lined up for the other place.
Fine.
A good one.
So, it’s, well, I think it would be better than what we got.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, that’s good. You’re making progress.
So, things are looking good there.
One thing I wanted to have you do for me, that High City contract. Yeah. We haven’t got a very clear copy of that one.
Oh, well. Could you copy yours and send it over?
Oh, yes, sir.
When you come down, I’ll give you mine.
Because I can hardly make ours up.
Well, I’ll give you mine.
I was down there today.
They got the paving done. They do?
And it’s just about an inch below the Gerby’s room. Oh, yeah.
But I was trying to find out about their fuse disconnect to see when they were getting that in.
Ah.
But they were doing the paving today when I was down there. Uh-huh.
So, it’s still pretty soft, you know.
Yeah, yeah. It’s got to have a few days to cure, I guess.
But if we get rain, well, that’ll help.
Yeah, I think so.
But in any event, you can get it in.
Good.
That’s the main thing.
Good.
It’s just an inch below, you know.
Yeah.
Are they going to put something in there for getting their box in and out? For getting their box in and out?
Yeah.
Well, I think they’ll have to. Yeah. You know, it’s a, hmm, they got to go over that little where the door closes, eh?
Yeah. It’s very slight, but then they’ll have to do, work something out themselves.
More than likely, that’s going to be a long ways to push that box out to where they got to go with.
Well, uh, yes, I guess maybe, uh, let me, I don’t think it’ll be 50 feet. No.
Uh, they just push it out so it clears that, uh, overhead.
That’s all. Yeah.
Well, we’ll have to see how it works out for them anyway.
Yeah.
Well, I thought you’d be interested that, uh, the paving, uh, now it can be next week, not weeks from now. Good. That sounds real good. Yeah.
I’ll plan on that next week, then. Get that one in there.
Yeah, good. Good.
So, uh, we’re going to be getting that one out of our hair.
Yeah.
Uh, I’m working on this here other one. I’m working on today the, uh, one for the Ontario housing.
Oh, yeah. So, uh, I’m getting electrical lined up for that.
Yeah.
Right. Well, I was down there. I was telling your grandfather I was down there, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to take a window out. Yeah. It’s a big window. Yeah. And, uh, it, uh, what it is, it’s, uh, it’s below ground. And, uh, I’m pretty sure you’re going to slide her down on two by eights right to the, right to the floor. Yeah.
Well, I’ll have to, uh, as soon as they get the things straightened around there, I’ll have to go down and measure up to the hopper anyway, so. Yeah. Well, you got an idea of what it would be like from their drawing. Yeah. A little bit here, yeah.
Yeah. Uh, I was reading over their, uh, little, uh, specification sheet that they sent along with the ordering.
Yeah. And they mentioned here that they want, uh, five copies of sharp drawings showing in detail the compactor.
Is that necessary?
Do you really want that?
Or, uh, what’s the story behind that? Well, I think what they want is, uh, uh, details so they can order parts. Uh, they do their own maintenance, you know.
And, uh, I should imagine that, uh, if, uh, if, uh, let me see, it’s a, it’s the patented one, isn’t it?
It’s, uh, compacts up against the door, eh?
Yeah. Yeah.
That’s fully patented.
Well, the, not the basic machine itself, it’s the water system.
Oh, the water, uh, the water ram is patented.
Yeah, but, uh, the water system is exactly the same design as this here, uh, oil system.
Yes, I see.
Uh, no. Well, you can speak to them when you’re down there about that, about the sharp drawings. Yeah. I can give them sharp drawings, uh, nothing wrong with that, but it really won’t tell them very much because, uh, uh, I can give them a detail list of all the component manufacturers. Well, why don’t you do that? Yeah, that’d be more valuable to them than drawings.
Yeah, well, why don’t you do that when you’re down there?
Yeah.
And, uh, we can have a talk with them, eh? Okay.
All right, so… When did you want to get in there?
Oh, uh, when are they going to be ready? Well, uh, they’re supposed to, uh, move the beam and pour the concrete, but they haven’t done it yet.
Well, when I go up to install the high seating, how far is it from the high seating? Oh, it’s not that far.
Well, maybe we can stop in then.
Yeah, yeah, we can do that.
Maybe they’ll have it done by then.
We can do that.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so you can expect me out Monday morning at the, uh, third installation there with the box for them. Yeah, all right, fine, I’ll meet you out there. Okay, John. Okay, thanks for calling. You’re welcome. Right, Ron.
Goodbye.
Bye. Hello? Yes, Mr. Kelsey. Yeah, I’ll bet.
Demers.
Yeah, I know.
I got that order in my hand.
Well, that’s just what you wanted, isn’t it? That’s right.
I wasn’t going to move too swiftly until I had that.
No.
Uh, now they want to know, of course. Uh, he says, since I gave you the okay a month ago, I presume you’re just about ready to install it. I said, not quite, you know.
Well, uh…
I told them that possibly by the end of the month.
No, I don’t think so.
Well, they’re going to be pushing fast, hard now.
I know.
That’s the trouble with them.
They work so slow themselves and they expect everybody else to…
Yeah, everybody else to jump. Yeah.
Anyhow, we should get together to finalize the hopper details.
Well, don’t forget that we can get in there, you know, in the evening, so if you want to make it like a late afternoon or even night.
Yeah.
Yeah. Ron’s going to Toronto Monday.
We’ve got one to go in down there that’s been done for, that’s the trouble with these guys, they give you an order and then they, when they do get it off, we had it done for a month and a half in there. Yeah.
Yeah. And it’s sitting here on the floor, but now they’re ready to put it in. Yeah. Yeah. And we had the one order from Toronto too, like what you got.
Yeah.
But we had the compactor here. Yeah.
One we took out of Valtech or, Valtech something.
Yeah.
Yeah. And we’ve got to rebuild that one over, that is, they didn’t use it only once or twice, I guess, for the triad. Yeah.
Yeah. So we’ve got to clean it up and paint it and rewire it and take it down there. Yeah.
Yeah.
And I don’t think they’re in a very big rush for that one.
What we’ll do is get cracking on yours.
Yeah. Okay. Well, you know, ours primarily, the carts are going to be a big issue. Yeah. Plus the hopper. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I think we will have to go down. Yeah.
Well, it’s only necessary for possibly one person to come, you know.
Well, yeah, Ronnie would like to be the one that has to go, but I’ll go along with him maybe if he goes in the afternoon, eh?
See what, yeah, okay.
What I want to do, the fellow that’s in charge of the public works, you know, on the garbage pickup.
Yeah.
He’s going to enter into the discussion now about the carts.
Oh, yeah. And it’s, again, important.
We’re setting groundwork here, and then I expect to be able to exploit these people in, you know, many of the properties they own.
Right.
So this is, like, going to be a sort of a showpiece.
Yeah. It’s going to end up like a showpiece. Well, it would be. It’s quite a complicated one there, isn’t it? Yeah. Well, the thing is that I would, you know, want to be able to say, come on, I’ll pick you up and show you an installation.
Yeah, that’s right.
Sort of deal, you know?
That’s what you need down there.
What I need is that sort of a pilot model.
We found out the same in Toronto.
Until we had some in there that they could look at, it was almost impossible to sell them.
Yeah.
I also, once you’ve, you know, got a couple of these McDonald’s under your belt there, and maybe some pictures, I would then like to work the McDonald’s in this area.
Well, I’ll tell you what I have in mind.
I’m going to, as soon as I can get to it, I’ve got a 16mm camera.
Uh-huh.
I used to take a lot of pictures when I had the factory for the tobacco, eh?
Oh, yes. And it details out a lot of things, like shows you how it’s done, eh? Yeah. Well, again, if I had a little show or something of that nature, I can put on a special deal some night for the income property owners.
Yeah.
You know, the people who own apartment blocks around the area.
Right. Well, you know what will happen to you now is that the Ontario Housing is backing us up 100%.
That’s excellent.
And they’ve told John that they’ve got 19 units in Toronto that is high-rise apartments that needs quite a bit of surveying, and they expect about 8 or 9 machines that will be coming up sooner or later. Yeah. I hope not all at once. Yeah, yeah. And I think this will happen up there, too.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, that’s fine. And then, again, you know, a good foundation with these people opens the door from here to London, you know.
Yeah, yeah.
Because they’re involved in every municipality. Right. What’s your, have we got your telephone number at the house?
I’m not sure, but it’s 945-1464.
1464. Yeah.
Well, in case I can’t get you at the shop, sometimes I miss you.
Yeah. And if I get you at the house, it’s something important, you know. Well, usually I’m home from 6 o’clock on, you know. Yeah.
How is the wife? She’s still in bed, you know.
Oh, dear.
Resting easy.
That’s a heartache.
But it’s a slow process.
She’s getting, I notice she gets up now and she stands more often without her walker and all that kind of stuff, so she’s getting there. Good, good. It’s a slow process. I know.
My wife is just getting back, so she’s halfway decent now.
Yeah. Yeah. Same with my, same with, she’s coming along.
And, you know, all you gotta be is patient.
Since talking with you, you know, we had put in, I was involved with a group in the Solar Energy Society with the Canada Works programs to employ students for the summer on a couple of projects, and we got them both.
So I’m the coordinator of those two projects, too.
Are you?
So, you know, I’m busy, so that’s why if you call and I’m not here, I’m out someplace.
Well, that wouldn’t bother your wife.
She can’t take the call, would she?
Oh, yeah.
She can take the call. No problem.
Well, I wouldn’t want to bother her unless it was important.
That’s just in case. No problem, because she’s, the phone’s right by the bed, and, you know, she gets a lot of calls. Yeah.
They try to reach me.
Well, I just, I won’t bother you unless…
She just bird dogs me into the ground, you know. She says, somebody called, you better get her home.
What we’ll do, I imagine it’ll be Tuesday. Wait a minute. Let’s see what Ron has to say here. He’s right in front of me. Okay. Well, what do you think?
Could you get in there tomorrow afternoon? Tomorrow afternoon I got a meeting.
Oh.
What about evening?
Um…
It’ll only take a few minutes to look the thing over, you know.
Yeah, the only thing we wouldn’t be able to get a hold of this other fellow having to do with the carts.
Oh, yeah.
But, um, maybe that’s not so critical at the moment, other than the fact we should make sure we have our measurements and where it worked.
Where’d they get the go-kart that they had there?
Did they have to bring that from somewhere else?
Well, the go-kart, you know… Well, you know, he used a cart to go through that elevator. Well, that was one of the carts they had, you know, around there. I imagine it comes from the Department of Public Works.
Well, what the engineer planned on was 24 by 48. Well, if you remember, he had made some sketches on it.
Yeah, I know. We got that. Yeah. But I was wondering if he was 100% sure. You know the rails on the elevator?
Yeah.
That is the protection rails for the sidewall, eh?
Yeah.
I don’t know whether he got up against those or not.
I’m not sure, and we’d have to measure that, and also it may even be necessary to raise those rails.
I don’t think they’re for to hold on to anything.
I think they were for protection.
Well, they must be there so people can steady themselves. Well, that or protection for anything hitting the walls.
Well, it could be, yeah. I thought that’s what they looked like to me. Yeah. Well, anyway, if we could get in, that’s the only thing I would want to be awful sure on is the tow boxers. Yeah. Well, it’ll be no problem for us to get there, let us say, late tomorrow afternoon if this is what you want to do. Well, I don’t want to do it, but Ron just tells me that Monday he’s, I think it’s Tron on Monday, and Tuesday he’s got to get things ready for Wednesday.
He’s putting this one that I told you about in on Wednesday.
Yeah.
Now, that means that he’s got a pretty tight schedule for himself.
Well, okay. What I’ll do is I’ll get in touch with them today and tell them we’re going to be in there tomorrow. Well, we’ll leave here, oh, after dinner. You see, my meeting tomorrow afternoon, and it’s with the committee of five guys.
